Politics in Ancient MesopotamiaIn the Neolithic Era people were ruled by kings that people thought were chosen by the gods. That belief made kings very powerful. It also helped reinforce social order because obeying the will of the gods was one of Sumerians strongest beliefs. Some of the king's jobs included enforcing laws and collecting taxes, building temples and making sure the irrigation systems were maintained. The king led his city state's army which was highly needed over the constant fighting over land boundaries and use of water. Controlling the army was one of the king's most important jobs. A Sumerian army included foot soldiers and soldiers that rode chariots (wheeled vehicles pulled by horses). Officials were appointed by the king to do certain duties. Governors ruled outlying towns. Scribes recorded laws. There were lots of forms of government in the Neolithic Era, and there still is today.
Fun Fact:The Sumerians were the first people to have a written system of laws.
